If the accused person does not admit the truth of the charge, the court shall proceed to hear the witnesses for the prosecution. The accused person or the accused person's counsel may cross-examine each witness called by the prosecution and if the accused person is not represented by counsel the court shall, at the close of the examination of each witness for the prosecution, ask the accused person whether that accused person wishes to put any question to that witness and shall record the accused person's answer.
