Where a registered nurse in charge is of the view that a voluntary patient is suffering from mental impairment or a serious mental illness and appears likely to leave the hospital premises, the registered nurse in charge may detain such person for a period no longer than six hours so that a formal assessment can be made by a medical doctor.
