A person who by force rescues or attempts to rescue from lawful custody any person —
if such person is under sentence of imprisonment for life or charged with an offence punishable with imprisonment for life, commits an offence and is liable to imprisonment for life;
if such person is imprisoned on a charge or under sentence for an offence other than those specified in paragraph (a), commits an offence and is liable to imprisonment for seven years; or
in any other case, commits an offence:
Provided that if the person rescued is in the custody of a private person, the offender must have notice of the fact that the person rescued is in lawful custody.
